Business Beat: A word with Primal Alchemy on catering the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony

Dana and Paul Buchanan, the owners of Primal Alchemy Catering, can keep a secret. Many Long Beach residents were surprised to see superstars like Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snoop Dogg performing at Granada and Rosie’s Dog Beaches during the closing ceremony for the 2024 Summer Olympics on Sunday, Aug. 11 — except for the Buchanans, who were selected to cater the event, which actually got underway the day before the closing ceremony was broadcast to the rest of the world.

The Long Beach Urban Farm Dinner—founded by Primal Alchemy owners Chef Paul and Dana Buchanan—is about to have its 14th dinner on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Organic Harvest Gardens.

Of course, there’s much more to the story than it being another ticketed dinner event.

After two years of navigating the pandemic and loss of business, coping with inflation has been yet another challenge for Dana Buchanan, co-owner of local catering business Primal Alchemy. For the past 20 years, Primal Alchemy grew steadily in Long Beach, with its roots in sustainable and seasonal menus, until March 2020, when essentially all business was gone in one day, Buchanan said.

At the very end of Dana Buchanan’s resume, the founder and co-owner of Primal Alchemy catering firm in Long Beach listed “being a catalyst” as one of her hobbies. After the Wedding: How Four Local Couples Are Making it Work in Business and at Home

Ask a married couple running a business together how they do it – maintaining a healthy marriage while dealing with one another all day, under the stresses of a self-owned business no less – and they’re likely to react with a laugh. That, and you might even get the in-unison response: “We get asked that all the time.” At least, that’s what happened when four Long Beach married couples..

ON THE LINE: PAUL BUCHANAN OF PRIMAL ALCHEMY

During my time with OC Weekly, one name that’s been in my peripheral is Chef Buchanan. Based out of Long Beach, his resume is like a six-degrees of OC, LA and beyond. I finally got to chat with Paul and his wife, Dana, while attending an intimate Brouwerij West beer pairing dinner they were catering.
